LACONIA — While most children grow up playing with blocks and other toys, Robert Allen Fahey often recalls a childhood spent setting up miniature séances with his mother in front of a Ouija board.

Dr. Fahey — a former Wolfeboro, New Hampshire resident — has a fast-growing following on a national level as a premier psychic medium and he built the basis for his career giving readings in the Lakes Region, which remains a home away from home for him.

"I always had this (trait) like people who are colorblind or write with the left hand ... I just had an intuitive knowing," said Dr. Fahey of his belief that he can literally connect to the spiritual world.

Fahey, 56, lived in Wolfeboro for four years but now lives in Fort Myers, FL where he operates a psychic service that caters to everything from private consultations to huge gatherings at conference centers.

His website at www.contactingthespiritworld.com offers a full range of psychic offerings that allow interested parties to get email consultations or arrange private visits that often have him flying up to New England to meet with groups or individuals.

Dr. Fahey — a former regular guest on radio station WTPL 107.7 FM's "The New Hampshire Wake-Up Show"— is known for performing psychic readings that see him acting as a conduit to the spirits. He claims his specialty is assisting clients with communicating with deceased relatives.

He said his 30-minute segment on the show doesn't come close to covering the dozens of people who call in to ask questions, many of whom must be turned away or pay for his service through his website.

Since 2003, he has conducted five public annual galleries, hundreds of private home events and thousands of psychic readings. At the end of a psychic reading, each person is eligible to ask two psychic questions that can range from the topics of one's love life to their career paths.

Dr. Fahey holds a master's degree and a doctoral degree in education with a major in counseling psychology and specialization in training and human performance improvement. For the past two years Dr. Fahey has served as an online faculty instructor for the University of Phoenix in the College of Health and Human Services teaching communications and multicultural diversity. However, he spends most of his hours providing psychic readings to his many customers.

He says he knew of his psychic abilities before he entered grade school.

Dr. Fahey said his mother helped cultivate the skill but he worked to hide it for years in an attempt to prevent himself from being labeled as an outsider.

"It was sort of encouraged (by my mother) but it was hidden. Who wants to be labeled as something?" said Fahey.

Dr. Fahey recalled tough years in high school when he took up ventriloquism to mask his ability to communicate with what he believes are otherworldly beings. He said the hobby didn't go over well once he became old enough to date.

"When you are a teenager you start dating and (girls would come over). They had dolls ... I had dolls," explained Dr. Fahey.

The longtime professional counselor said he sort of, "came out of the closet" with his psychic abilities in 2003 when he led a home reading in Dover and launched into a career that he says is all about helping people.

Dr. Fahey doesn't claim to always have a clear picture of people's futures but he said he often does have "factual" information of things to come in his client's lives.

He said he is always brave about coming out with predictions if he gets what he feels is a precise channel to the spirit world from a given individual.

"Some (readings) are very clear and I become very bold (even if the person is taken aback). I don't care ... it's factual and there is no question about that," said Dr. Fahey.

Dr. Fahey said there are other times when his communications with the spirits are more cloudy and he can only give partial indications of what is to come for a client, like the letters of a name that will manifest itself in their future or past.

"There are many times where I will say I have something taking place (in their lives) and I have no idea what it means," said Fahey.

However, he assured that many — even skeptics — are often amazed by his ability to predict events in their lives with great accuracy.

Dr. Fahey said he went to a reading at a Tilton home in October where a woman's daughter — who had been divorced and not dating for three to four years — asked him if she would find her "soul mate".

The psychic said he revealed to her that she would find the person before March and would not need to move to be with them. He said the letters "D" and "E" were being communicated to him from the spirit world.

He said the woman rolled her eyes initially but about three weeks ago he got a call from her mother indicating that she had started dating a man who moved onto their street from Texas, and whose name was Don Ellis.

Dr. Fahey said he is often struck by his own abilities and he said his services are as much about entertainment and fun as they are about garnering an emotional experience.

"The reason I continue to do it is because it's amazing, as I am not only a performer but a spectator at the same time," said Dr. Fahey.

Dr. Fahey was actually raised Catholic and is now a licensed minister in both New Hampshire and Florida.

However he said he has had his battles with deeply religious people warning him not to try and communicate with spirits, which they have told him is not God's will.

His response is simple: "In 30 years he has never told me that".

Dr. Fahey said he treads lightly with those who might balk at his abilities but he believes they are real.

When asked about how the otherworldly communications come to him, he responded by saying: "It's like energy traveling".

And a lot of people have a great deal of faith in Dr. Fahey's abilities.

Over the years, the psychic has worked with thousands and he gets email and telephone consultations with people as far away as Las Vegas and beyond. Fahey uses PayPal to charge people for the readings and a 30-minute consultation runs for $200 while a single-question psychic email response runs $25.

He said his popularity continues to grow.

"I even have my own groupies and Fan Clubs now," said Dr. Fahey with a laugh.

Dr. Fahey will return to the Lakes Region on May 25 when he will appear at The Margate in Laconia at a Public Psychic Gallery.
